The Power of Lavender

Recently I have been trying to turn to more natural substitutes for stress and anxiety. My conclusion has been to turn to everything Lavender.

Lavender Essential Oil has been allowing me to sleep, relax my muscles and have a great scent around me at all times. Mixed in with my Chanel No. 19, a strange amount of people have told me that I smell very delightful.

There are many uses and benefits to using this oil and turning away from Prescriptions or harsher solutions so frequently. Don’t take me wrong, I love my Xanax and Valium, but it is best to stay non-reliant on Benzodiazapenes. (Comment on this post if anyone wants a lengthy post on Benzos!)

At bed time I rub the oil on my temples, my wrists and the soles of my feet. These are the most porous parts that allow the oil to enter the bloodstream. It allows you to release tension and stress. Inhaling the scent in three deep breaths also allows for the mind to calm quickly.

Other Uses:

1. Sleep Aide

2. Cuts/Scrapes

3. Insect Bites & Stings

4. Motion Sickness

5. Dry & Chapped Sunburn Skin

… There is a whole list of things it could be used for. My sister is currently with child and she has been using it for various aches and pains in her pregnancy. I won’t write up on it more because it is not my experience but there are a few great posts on the topic throughout the Blogosphere.

Now as I pour myself a glass of MoĂ«t, I’ll add a few drops of Lavender Oil as it is very okay to ingest. Adds a great floral taste. One of my favorite Liquors is actually Lavender based. Similar to Creme de Violette.

Cheers!

Rosé {R&R&R}

Standard

With the school year during intercession, and just working full time, I have been really on a R&R kick. There are a few things this break that have gotten me to this very calm, slightly reclusive, and health fanatic state. Also the time to be able to post my thoughts. Hopefully this semester will keep this track. I feel strong and better then ever, sometimes you really do just need a break from the chaos of it all.

~RosĂ© – I can honestly say that I have drank at least twenty bottles of RosĂ©. All different flavors, it is so amazing. Dry and bubbly, just the way I like it. My top three choices of this break were:\

  1. Old School Cinsault RoséOLD+SCHOOL+ROSE
  2. Broadbent Vinho Verde (As Always)
  3. Moët Chandon RoséRose-Imperial_fixed_1280x1096
  4. Mumm Napa Brut Rosé1_1522750_3

There is this new APP for both Android/iPhone platforms called *Delectable* which I have been using very frequently to track the wines that I drink. It is used a lot by Sommeliers and those who really know wine more so than casual wine drinkers but I very much so recommend all to start using it!

~Sauvignon Blanc

1. NYE was filled with much alcohol, and mostly Champagne & Sauvignon Blanc with two of my human beings from a hometown family. It was quite a messy situation, but we all made it out alive and standing…. I think. Anyway, the Wine was from Ninety Cellars, and has a delightful, crisp taste that is to die for.

~Gin & Lemon Whiskey Cocktails

I had many of these cocktails at one of my favorite bars downtown Rochester called Ox & Stone(http://www.oxandstone.com/). Great bartenders, great cocktails and a old timey feel with dim lights. Very nice for an evening of brooding. 😉

This weekend I will be traveling the East Coast to visit some dear friends and I will be loving the life for sure. I will be excited to document yet another trip of good food, good alcohol, and of course my best friends. As my relaxation continues, I must get back to work so as to finish all my paperwork before I depart tomorrow.

Boston, here I come!

Progressive Injury?

Standard

I have been in a very feelsy mood recently, and for those of you who are ravers you know exactly what I mean. Love, happiness, peace and a weird constant feeling of goosebumps. Now I am very picky about my Progressive House music, but there are some songs that move me to great places.

I have injured my back (ugh, herniated disc), so I have been listening to Progressive all day improving my playlist and also just listening as I do homework. This post is my happy playlist. Very much so inspired by my best friend Corey who I could not live without. Probably one of the best people in my life, very crazy, a chemist, and a really good freaking friend. In his words “Bitch I hope the fuck you do, you be a dead son of a bitch, I tell you dat.”

This pretty much explains our relationship, a weekend we partied in Connecticut with our friends, very illogical things happened that weekend.

Anyway, here is my Progressive House musts. Very good and feelsy. I personally love them all and have very special moments attached to many of these songs. They have gotten me through a time or two. Including right now.

I could really go on a rant about my injury, herniated discs, how it’s definitely all my father’s DNA at fault and how to help, but it won’t for a couple of reasons.

1. Never treat your back yourself. Your spine is PRECIOUS. It allows me to run, dance and do all the things I love. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. See a chiropractor, and for those minor muscle injuries, a licensed massage therapist can really do the trick.

2. I am using this time to pop and adderall and blow through some readings and physics homework.

3. I am trying to not enrage myself that I am a helpless lump on our couch right now.

Enjoy music fanatics. 🙂

Cheers, bitches!

SPICY SPICY SPICY

Standard

There are a lot of benefits to eating spicy foods. I myself love spicy everything, perhaps even carry around Hot Sauce packets in my school bag in case of a low HEAT emergency. All International Food is my favorite. Some of the best food is the little random markets and diners that you find in the middle of cities, ‘hidden gems’ you could say.

This is the chemistry behind spice and its ‘capsicum’ levels and how as you approach 100% capsaicin, how the heat becomes a poison:

Capsaicin is present in large quantities in the placental tissue (seed location), the internal membranes and, to a lesser extent, the other fleshy parts of the fruits of plants in the genus Capsicum. The seeds themselves do not produce any capsaicin, although the highest concentration of capsaicin can be found in the white pith of the inner wall, where the seeds are attached.

CAPSAICIN

The burning sensation caused by capsaicin when it comes in contact with mucous membranes is commonly used in food products to give them added spice (piquancy). In high concentrations, capsaicin will also cause a burning effect on other sensitive areas of skin. The degree of heat found within a food is often measured on the Scoville scale.

Bell peppers are structured so that they eliminate capsaicin, hence why they do not have any spice.

Certain wines use ‘capsicum’ to add flavor and certain heats to wines. It gives certain wines that peppery taste. Look on the descriptions of the bottles or ask a sales associate!

Here are a few of my favorite recipes:

Peppers: ALL PEPPERS – There are so many amazing peppers to cook with out there.

Indian Food/Curry: Indian Green Bell Pepper And Chicken Curry

Cumin: Southwestern Roasted Cauliflower Recipe with Cumin & Paprika

Mexican/Spanish Heat: Grilled Mexican Corn Salad

Stuffed Peppers: Spicy Quinoa Poblano Stuffed Peppers

Everyone should start adding spice to everything in their life. Give all your food a little kick. It boosts your metabolism and makes everything taste so much better. Sriracha is my personal favorite hot sauce. It’s got a very complex flavor that goes well with many things (eggs, sandwiches, asian spiced foods).

SPICE up your life my people. 😉

Tea Tree Oil

Standard

Tea Tree Oil is one of my favorite all natural cure alls. It is good for your health, skin and all natural. It is taken from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia, which is native to Southeast Queensland and the Northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. It has this calming and soothing smell about it.

My favorite body wash is made with tea tree oil and it keeps my skin so nice and smooth. The brand is called Body Essence and you can get it basically at everywhere Wal-Mart, etc.

Buying the actual Tea Tree Oil, you can find it at The Vitamin Shoppe (in various brands and forms) but my personal favorite is The Body Shop, it treats blemishes really well.

I recommend that everyone start using this natural cure all and seeing what uses you can find for it. Google it, there are many different ways to use Tea Tree Oil! If you love your skin as much as I do… you WILL want this product.
